OBITUARY: (TAUNTON)
Richard P. McCormick Jr., aged 65, died on December 10, 2013 after a brief struggle with lung cancer. He was the son of Lorraine and Richard P. McCormick Sr. He graduated from Stoughton High School in 1966, and attended UMass Dartmouth for several semesters before joining the Coast Guard in 1968. Richard served aboard the USCG cutter, Yakutat and was part of the crew that trained and eventually turned over the ship to the Vietnamese Navy in 1971. When he returned to the States, he was stationed at Coast Guard Base Boston. Upon leaving active duty Richard attended Bridgewater State College, majoring in Biology. After graduation he entered a Master’s degree program in Marine Biology at the University of Rhode Island. Richard had an active and inquisitive intelligence. He loved sailing, photography and technology of all sorts. During his life he worked for several publications, most notably as the Art Director for Offshore Magazine. At the time of his death, Mr. McCormick was employed by EMC Corporation in Hopkinton, MA, where he worked as a Network Operation Specialist. He is survived by his loving family, his sisters, Sheila McCormick and Rosemary McCormick, his nieces and nephews, Shawn Haloon and Matiah Haloon, Leah McCormick and Joseph M. McCormick, his sister-in-law, Linda Gallant McCormick, and a grandniece, Ava McCormick. His younger brother, Joseph T.G. McCormick, died in 2010. Richard will be profoundly missed by his family, friends and colleagues among whom he was well-known as a man with a brilliant wit and enormous acumen on a variety of subjects, but also an abundance of kindness and generosity. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Richard’s name to WGBH Public Television at One Guest Street in Boston, MA. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, December 21st from 5-7 pm in the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak St Middleboro, with a memorial service to be held at 7 pm in the funeral home.
